This article will help you perform a Bare Metal restore of your server. Please note that to begin this process you will need the server root login details and the login information for your R1Sort management portal.
If you are using Backup Protection, which is based upon R1Soft, you won't have access to login to the R1Soft portal directly and should contact 100TB Technical Support to run a bare metal restore.
This process will be broken up into three main sections. The first is booting into the Ubuntu based live CD using the media provided by R1Soft. The second is setting up the network once in the live CD. Last is actually starting the restore from your CDP website.
Click on the “Virtual Media” button inside of the IPMI window. Click the “Virtual Storage” option.
Once you have the ISO file mounted in IPMI, reboot the server and select the “Virtual CDROM …” from the boot options menu, as shown below.
Once the server is booted from the Live CD, you must first connect the server to the public network and obtain a key from the R1Soft CDP server, before you can start the restore. The following steps will walk you through this process.
Before you begin, you will want to change to the root account on the live CD. You can do this by running the following command:
# sudo su
You will then need to run a few more commands to specify your network address and name servers. If you are not sure you can contact support and we can help you fill in the blanks.
First, run the following command to add IP address information:
# ifconfig eth1 (server public IP) netmask (associating netmask here, e.g. 255.255.255.0)
Add the gateway information:
# route add default gw (Default Gateway Here)
As the last command, add some name servers so that we can reach a domain if needed:
# echo nameserver 188.8.131.52 >> /etc/resolv.conf # echo nameserver 184.108.40.206 >> /etc/resolv.conf
After changing the network settings, restart the network for the changes to take affect. You can do this by running the following command:
# sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
Now that we have the network running, you will need to start the cdp agent. You can do so by running the following command:
# /etc/init.d/cdp-agent start
The last command needed will retrieve a key from the server:
# r1soft-setup --get-key (URL of the CDP Server here)
Now that we have the server setup and connected to your R1soft server, you will need to login to your R1Soft CDP server to continue the restore.
Once you have logged into your CDP Server website (e.g. https://cdpXX-2.100tb.com), click the button labeled “Recovery Points”.
Next, in your list of recovery points you will need to find the backup you want to use and click the backup restore button highlighted below:
From the window that appears, click the “Next” button to skip the introduction. Make sure that you select all of the file systems you would like restored.
On the next screen, select the option “Restore to Original Host” and click “Next” to continue.
Make sure the option “Use Existing Storage Configuration” is selected.
On the next page, follow the same steps as outlined before and select the option for “Use Existing Partition Tables on Host” and click “Next”.
In the “Software Raid” section, select the “Use the Existing Software RAID Devices on Host” option.
If you have taken backups with LVM you will have the option to select LVM groups to restore. In most cases, you will want to use the default and click “Next”.
Verify that the filesystem displayed matches your server. In almost every case the default is correct but it is important to check.
The last step is optional but recommended. Checking the filesystem after a restore can help prevent issues with data loss or corruption in the future.
Click the “Restore” button for your server will begin the restore. Once complete, you should see a window similar to the image below.
Once the restore has completed, you may reboot your server and login with the original login credentials.
